New QEII another step closer as car parks open

Preparation for construction on the New QEII steps up a notch this week as new temporary car parks open (4th June 2013) at the hospital in Welwyn Garden City.

The temporary car parks will be phased into use over the course of the week (4th – 7th June 2013). Once the car park is up and running the main public car park at the front of the site will be fenced off, allowing ground work to begin on the New QEII.

Jacqui Bunce from East and North Herts Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said: “This is an important step forward and we’re pleased the temporary car parks have been completed on time. Ground work to prepare the site for the new hospital will start shortly. This includes the demolition of the empty Peartree and Harmer House buildings within the boundaries of the site.

“We’ve made sure that the hoarding around the New QEII site will have special viewing holes, so that once the building work starts people will be able to see the new hospital taking shape.”

There will be a slight change in the road layout on the hospital site, but car park staff will be on hand to help patients find their way. A new map detailing these changes will be available to download from the Trust and CCG websites. An update on the changes will be included in patient appointment letters and on posters around the hospital site.

Scheduled to open in Spring of 2015, the New QEII is a £30m investment, planned by GPs from the CCG. It will be a brand new building providing a modern environment for the services that local people use most often.

The New QEII will have a significant range of services including a local A&E, outpatients, diagnostics and therapies. For the latest information on the developments, go to
