Wheelchair service in Hertfordshire
The Hertfordshire Wheelchair Service provides wheelchair equipment, assessments and support for children and adults who are registered with a Hertfordshire GP and who need to use a wheelchair long-term (normally six months or more) due to a disability, terminal illness or severely limiting medical condition.
Millbrook Healthcare provides the service on behalf of the NHS in Hertfordshire. They provide the following types of wheelchairs and equipment.
- Manual wheelchairs (options for self-propelled or those pushed by an attendant)
- Powered indoor wheelchairs
- Powered indoor and outdoor wheelchairs
- Specialist buggies, wheelchairs and seating for children
- Specialist bespoke seating systems for use with a wheelchair
- Pressure relieving cushions and some accessories for wheelchairs
Accessing the service
If you are a current wheelchair user you can contact Millbrook directly.
New users can be referred into the service by any qualified healthcare professional such as a GP, district nurse, physiotherapist and occupational therapist. Once they have provided Millbrook with information about your health needs, a Millbrook occupational therapist will review this and contact you about next steps.
Appointments take place in fully accessible premises in Welwyn Garden City which offer:
- Five large clinic rooms for assessments, including over-head track hoists
- Bespoke and specialist wheelchairs and associated equipment
- Wheelchair repairs, adaptations and seating adjustments
Having services on one site means that one in three customers get their wheelchair on the same day as their assessment.
Some assessments may also be held in others such as in a clinic, at home, at a day centre or at school to help people fit appointments around their daily routine.
New satellite clinics - From October 2017 the service is piloting some satellite and drop-in clinics to offer some appointments locally. Millbrook will contact you to offer a local appointment if you have an upcoming appointment that may be suitable for this.
Personal Wheelchair Budgets
Personal Wheelchair Budgets are available for some wheelchair users to provide a greater choice of wheelchairs. They replace the wheelchair voucher scheme.
During your assessment a clinician will work with you to identify your needs and what you want from your wheelchair. You will be given a personal wheelchair budget that is equivalent to the cost of your prescribed wheelchair. Depending on the type of personal wheelchair budget you have, you could have the option to top up the budget which may allow you to add an additional feature to your prescribed wheelchair or you could use your wheelchair budget to a buy a wheelchair from another approved supplier. Read our leaflet for more details.
Millbrook Opening times
Customer service opening hours are: Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm. Evening clinics will also be available from 9am to 8pm one working day per week.
Wheelchair Service User Group
Our wheelchair service user and carer group helps us to make sure that wheelchair service is effective and continues to meet the needs of patients and their carers. The group meets every three months, in a variety of locations across Hertfordshire, and makes sure that we continue to work with our customers to provide the best possible service.
This group has played a big part in shaping the requirements for the wheelchair service and has influenced innovations such as local clinics and evening and weekend appointments. We want that involvement to continue.
